LANAP® Minimally Invasive Treatment for Moderate to Severe Gum Disease

LANAP—Laser-Assisted New Attachment Procedure— is an FDA approved safe and effective method of treating gum disease. Instead of the scalpel used in traditional periodontic surgery, the LANAP procedure utilizes a soft tissue laser to gently remove diseased gum tissue without affecting healthy gum tissue. Healing time with LANAP is much quicker than with traditional methods of treating moderate to severe gum disease.

Our periodontist, Dr. Scott Dault, is an expert in the diagnosis and treatment of the gums. Our patients benefit from his many years of experience and his advanced training. Patients who have moderate to severe gum disease can be evaluated by Dr. Dault for recommendations on treatment, as well as to see if they are candidates for LANAP.

How LANAP works

Efficient and comfortable

Laser Gum Disease TreatmentLANAP typically takes two 2-hour visits or one long session, in which patients can opt to use oral sedation. Patients typically come for two follow-up visits. Rather than weeks of recovery needed with traditional surgery, recovery time with LANAP is very fast, and most patients may only need to use an over-the-counter pain reliever for any discomfort for one or two days. You can even eat right after the procedure and most people return to work the next day.

Exam & Consultation

Dr. Dault starts by explaining how the laser works and gives you a demonstration. We take digital X-rays and perform an oral exam and take other tests to determine the extent of the infection and for treatment planning.

Our laser gum disease treatment procedure

The LANAP procedure is much less traumatic than regular surgery and requires only local anesthetic to eliminate any possible discomfort. Dr. Dault will treat one half of your mouth in the first two-hour session and the other half in the next.

A tiny laser fiber about the thickness of three hairs is inserted between the tooth and the gum and the infection is cleared away.

Once this is done, Dr. Dault uses an ultrasonic scaler (which uses sound waves) and hand instruments to remove the calculus from the root surfaces. The laser is then use to completely clean the gum pocket and to seal it so that bacteria cannot enter again.

As a result of the treatment, the pocket re-attaches to the now-smooth surface of the tooth root.

Laser Gum Disease Treatment

  1. A probe is used to determine the depth of the gum pocket
  2. A tiny soft-tissue laser (the thickness of about 3 hairs) removes bacteria and diseased tissue, clearing away any infection
  3. Ultrasonic scaler and special hand instruments are used to remove root surface tarter
  4. Laser finishes cleaning pocket and  seals the pocket closed so new germs can’t enter
  5. Gums reattach to the clean, smooth root surface
  6. Any bite trauma is adjusted
  7. Healing occurs. The gum is now healthier.
