Porcelain Veneers

A beautiful new smile in just three visits

For a fast but enduring smile makeover, Dr. Au offers porcelain veneers to correct a variety of imperfections in a smile.

What is a veneer?

Veneers (Impression)

A dental veneer is a thin facing made from porcelain that is bonded to the front of the tooth. These very natural-looking cosmetic restorations can completely transform your smile. Best of all, your smile makeover can be completed in just two visits of treatment, plus one for Dr. Au to take your measurements and impressions.

Porcelain veneers have an average lifetime of ten years but can last a very long time if well taken care of. Dr. Au advises our patients on how to keep their veneers looking good.

Our procedure for creating a beautiful new smile

Smile Design

Your new smile starts with in-depth planning by Dr. Au. He takes photos of your smile for digital imaging and study, impressions of your teeth and measurements of your teeth and facial proportions.

He uses smile design guides to help you choose the kind of smile you would like to have.

Dr. Au makes study models from the impressions of your teeth which he studies to see how the teeth meet. The study models also enable him to see, and show you, factors about your teeth that can’t otherwise be seen.

For treatment with several veneers, Dr. Au creates a “wax-up” by adding wax to the study model that he manipulates into the final look of the veneers. This tool not only helps Dr. Au plan your treatment, but it also gives you a visual of what your smile will look like. If you don’t like anything, Dr. Au can easily change the wax-up until you are fully satisfied with your future smile’s appearance.

In some cases, Dr. Au uses temporary veneers on the study model to better simulate the final restoration.

Together you and Dr. Au decide on the shape and shade of your veneers that will most enhance your looks.

Veneer preparation

In your second visit Dr. Au prepares your teeth to receive the veneers and attaches temporary veneers while your final veneers are being fabricated by our excellent lab. Teeth usually need to be shaved down a bit so that the veneers won’t add bulk to them. Dr. Au gives patients the option of local anesthetic to ensure comfort.

Final Veneers

Dr. Au can make minor adjustments to make your smile look its best.

In two weeks Dr. Au receives your permanent veneers ready to be cemented to your teeth. First, he adjusts as needed the size, length and color of the veneers, for a proper fit and correct color shading.

Next, your teeth are roughened slightly by etching to allow for a strong bonding process, then a bonding cement is applied to the veneer and the veneer is placed on your tooth. Dr. Au applies a special light that quickly hardens the cement. Excess cement is removed, and any final adjustments are made to the veneers and your bite (how the teeth come together).

Dental Bonding—An economical alternative to Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain Veneers

Before & After Dental Bonding

Dental bonding is often used for the many of the same purposes as veneers, as well as being used for aesthetic fillings. Dental bonding is tooth-colored composite resin material that is directly applied to teeth to augment teeth, such as in repairing chips, or covers teeth, such as to whiten discolored teeth. It requires no anesthesia and little tooth preparation.

Dental bonding is considerably more economical than porcelain veneers but can be less durable. However, Dr. Au has a lot of experience in dental bonding for cosmetic purposes, and can create a very natural-appearing, durable finish that can last as long as a veneer if cared for properly.

Uses of Dental Bonding

  • To fill cavities
  • To improve the appearance of yellowed, discolored teeth or stained teeth
  • To repair chipped or cracked teeth
  • To close gaps between teeth
  • To change the shape of teeth
  • To make teeth appear longer
  • To cover and protect a portion of a tooth’s root that has been exposed as a result of gum recession
